Discovery Elementary 3rd Grade
What is expected from home based learning:
This paper is an overview of everything that we will be doing. It will be broken down day by day with corresponding links on the third grade website under “News and Events”. You will find these on a separate document. If you have questions or concerns, contact your child’s teacher. Teachers will also have videoing options if you’d like to talk face to face.
Math:
-
Each child will need to complete one assignment a day from their math books. One assignment is typically 2-3 pages long. It has a dark blue instruction page (front and back), sometimes a second dark blue practice page (front and back), and a third green page (front and back). Third grade will be creating videos to go along with each lesson. If you have access to the internet, we feel it would be beneficial for your child to watch these videos as we learn about the different topics.
-
Dual immersion’s pages will be in Spanish, but the videos will be in English. If you need extra support with the Spanish, e-mail or call Mrs. Deraet.
-
Internet Math:
-
If you have the internet, we need each child to get their 45 minutes of iReady math each week. These 45 minutes can be broken up into 10-15 minutes each day over 3-5 days, or however works best for your schedule. We will be monitoring their progress throughout the week.
Regular Homework Math:
-
Students will be required to still do their 15-20 minutes of math facts each day. They need to first do their 5 minute mixed timing. If they don’t finish in 5 minutes, they should complete the rest of the page for practice and part of the homework time. After that, they can work on flash cards, Xtra math, or any other program to get their 15-20 minutes. Make sure you are signing the planner when homework is complete.

Reading:
-
Each child will need to complete a phonics lesson a week. We are sending home phonics books. We expect the following routine in doing the lessons:
-
Day 1 - Review sound(s). Practice saying the sounds and words through parts A and B. Some of these are the students’ spelling words for the week. In parts C, D and E, practice saying the words with prefixes or suffixes.
-
Day 2 - Part F. You will need to listen to your child read and keep track of errors made. First do a 1-minute timing, 3 times, starting from the beginning each time. Each time have them count the number of words read, subtracting any words they missed. Then write this number on the top of the paper (there should be 3 numbers when done.) Then read the whole story beginning to end.
-
Day 3 - Complete F, G, H, and I. Part F, they need to order the pictures. Part G is answering the comprehension questions, and in the passage, circling where they found the answers. Part H and I, follow book instructions.
-
We will have a video online for day 1 to go over sounds and words, parts A-E.
-
Answers G-I will be posted on Friday.
-
-
-
We are still doing spelling. Practice every day, either on spelling city, writing the words down on your own, or practice with a sibling or parent. On Fridays, you will need to have your child take the test on Spelling City. Write down your child’s score in their planner, or take the test paper pencil, and attach it to their planner.

Internet Reading:
-
We will be using the Scholastic website, go to Clever to access the Scholastic site. Each day will have 4 different articles. Your child will get to choose 1 of the articles that looks most interesting to them. They will need to read this article, and fill out a Google form about what they have read. On the left of the article, they will have text to speech options and you can also change the level of reading.
-
If you have the internet, we need each child to get at least 12 units per week completed on Lexia. This will be about 2-3 units per day. Each unit takes about 5 minutes to complete. You may divide this up throughout the 5 days however you need. We will be checking this frequently to monitor their progress.
Regular Reading Homework:
-
Kids will still be required to do their 20-30 minutes of reading homework on top of all the other learning. Make sure you are still signing the planner if homework is completed.
Dual Immersion Students:
-
If you have access to the internet, students will need to preview the Calle presentation linked on the Remote Learning Schedule. They should complete about 2 slides a day to reinforce their Spanish vocabulary.

-
All students should be reading the accompanying 2-page story. For those students that do not have access to the internet, there will be copies included in the materials collected from school.

-
In order to keep the students’ Spanish skills sharp, there is a link on Clever for them to access Duolingo. If they could do 15 or so minutes per day, that would be fantastic.
